Bighting that Hot and Sweaty Bullet...
Yup. Here I go feeling like a bit of a hypocrite. After months of chronic low back pain (nay...20 years of chronic low back pain), I am sick and tired of paying through the nose for massage therapy, chiropractic, and physiotherapy believing that they will solve my painful problem.
If you suffer from chronic pain, you will know the toll it takes on your energy, your patience, and your motivation to be active. I mean, who wants to be active if it means a day of pain after? I have been able to control it with stretching (not to mention the systems of pillows I construct every night to get through) but I'm done. I'm looking for something else. Uncle!
So when I read about this guy, who suffered from chronic low back pain, talking about how this yoga class helped him manage it...I couldn't help but wonder if maybe I should give it a try. I have to admit, I'm scared, I'm hesitant, I'm nervous, and I feel like I'm walking into a bad situation...but why not? Really, what do I have to loose except for the pain in the ass I've been carrying around for years?
Yes, I'm talking about hot yoga. I know I have gone on about the evils of it and the safety issues of exercising in 40 degree heat for 90 minutes. BUT...if it means I can get up in the morning without 30 minutes of prep time (i.e. stretching, crawling, and walking), it's worth eating my words for. I'm a big enough person to publically admit when I'm wrong.
I conducted my own opinion poll last night on Facebook to see what my FB friends had to say. Interestingly enough, I had comments ranging from "It stinks....I hate it" to "It's the most amazing class I have ever done!" I don't think I have ever heard such an array of opinions about a fitness class before. Like religion and politics, hot yoga "heats" up the conversation like no other.
So tomorrow night I am going to join the 7:30pm Bikram's Yoga class at my local studio to see what the fuss is all about. I'm warned I will sweat 10 pounds of body water (okay, I'll hydrate), I'm told I will want to strip down naked...(okay, I'll wear a tank). I'm warned it stinks of sweat, garlic, and a stank that can't be described without dry heaving...(oh God, I have no idea how to plan for that one).
No matter...I'm doing it and no one can stop me. I'm not a "hot" person but love the sauna. I've done two yoga classes before and have no flexibility...but I'm willing to learn, persevere and make this my new fitness regime. I really have no choice, my body is falling apart and I can't keep doing what I have been doing.
I will definately be writing all about my first hot yoga class....stay tuned.
